  1. d0179d1e7c8811e2b4b422000a1f903d_7Pringles Stix. Wednesday night, Hilary gave me a 100-calorie pack of Honey Butter-flavored Pringles Stix. If you’ve never tried these, do it. No, seriously–go buy some now and eat them. So amazing! Also, I’m completely ignoring the sodium content as I rave about this newfound snack. (I mean, they are still Pringles.)
  2. Twitter. On Wednesday, Twitter started reducing the size of tweets that include URLs. Links with http bring the character count to 118, while https links drop tweets to 117 characters. Read more about it at Mashable.
  3. Lip Gloss. I found a cool tutorial for DIY lip gloss made with Crystal Light. It reminds me of a lip gloss-making kit I had when I was a kid; I got to blend different scents in containers that looked almost exactly like those pictured in the tutorial. I really want to make some for Josh’s oldest niece and some of my cousins. I need a gift-giving holiday.
  4. a295effb-44d5-40cb-a2f6-91549d225d11_zps91c95361Whiskers. Earlier this week, I stumbled on this interesting article about why dogs (and other animals) have whiskers. So cool! (It reminds me of when Rascal would lose a whisker and I’d find it and spend forever trying to figure out what it was.)
  5. Beards. Turns out, guys’ beards can help improve their health and how well they age. Pretty cool, right? You can read all about the study that led to this discovery at AL.com. In the meantime, I’m going to encourage Josh to keep a bit of scruff. (Besides, it looks really good on him.)
  6. Social Media. I am loving this photo of social media in real life. Pure awesomeness. (I’m not even pretending that isn’t me.)
  7. Breaking Bad. Josh and I finished season 4 of Breaking Bad last week, and not being able to start the next season is driving me crazy! I need season 5 to be on Netflix, pronto.
  8. Bruschetta Burger. Remember how yesterday I mentioned how much I like bruschetta? Well, then this bruschetta burger came along, and, omg, I need it in my life. Now I need to figure out how to trick Josh into eating tomatoes.
  9. moviesThe Watch. Last weekend, Josh and I rented a couple of Redbox movies for our Valentine date night. We weren’t such huge fans of Pitch Perfect (gasp!), but we loved The Watch. It was hilarious! I totally recommend.

Tech Tuesday: Facebook likes vs. web page views

As a media professional (and a blogger), I rely on social media to drive traffic back to the content I write.

You may know already that I use many forms of social media, but today we’re going to focus on Facebook. (And, because I generally don’t like to talk about the goings-on of my job, we’ll be focusing on my blog rather than what I do at work. If you’re reading this as a journalist, keep in mind that using social media for general blogging is a bit different than it is for news outlets. Poynter is my favorite site for information about using social media with reporting.)

Facebook: a learning process

fbiconWe’re looking at Facebook today because it’s been on my mind a lot lately. I keep wondering how I can use Facebook to gain readers on my blog. My biggest struggle with Facebook is turning likes into page views. No matter how much my Facebook following grows, my blog stats tell me that, at most, I’m only getting about two or three clicks from Facebook per day. I’ve been doing some research to try to fix that.

Unfortunately, most of the data I’ve found applies to businesses rather than media companies.

Figuring out how to use social media to bring in more blog views is definitely a learning process for me, and I don’t think I’m alone. Just look at all the how-to’s, infographics and other teaching tools populating sites like Pinterest, Twitter and Google+. These tools certainly aren’t hard to find, but they all say the same thing: post this item at this time for the most likes/shares/comments. I have yet to find an article that explains how to turn those likes/shares/comments into page views for my blog.

Maybe that’s because no one really knows.

I think we’re all still trying to figure out Facebook (and social media in general).

But I do have a theory about how to grab readers’ attention through Facebook.

pagesiconI think it has more to do with content than anything else. It’s a lot like publishing a newspaper or magazine. What attracts people to pick up one publication over another (beyond easily-recognizable publication titles)? Photos. Headlines. Content.

Yes, many Facebook users enjoy looking at a nice photo, and photos will probably attract a good deal of likes and shares, but the I believe textual content of your Facebook post is what’s most important. Tell your readers why they should click through to your website. Otherwise, they may just like the photo and move on.

Tech Tuesdays

typingToday I want to introduce an idea I have (and I need your help).

I’ve decided to start a new series called “Tech Tuesday.” For the past few months (ever since my Bubble Frame review, actually), I’ve been toying with the idea of delving into some tech writing. I love tech-related things, and I think this will be a good chance to share some of my favorites with you while continuing to work on my 2013 verb by expanding my styles of writing.

Tech Tuesday will cover things like apps, games, phone and tablet accessories, social media stuff and so on. I can post reviews, tips and tricks, product info–whatever you want to see.

Here’s where I ask for your help. If you want to see something in particular, let me know. Want to know about a new social media site? Let me look into it. Or if you want more info about an app. I’ll even do reviews if you’re wondering whether you should download an app (if it’s a paid app, let’s keep it cheap–I’m still crawling out of my broke college student phase).
