Going through changes

blogshotI haven’t spent the past week hiding out. I’ve been here all along.

In addition to my regular work/job hunt, I’ve been working right here–on this blog. No huge changes here; just a lot of little things that I think will make a big difference for you.

For starters, I’ve tried to make navigation easier. You’ll notice several new drop-down menus at the top of the page. They’re listed under “About,” “My Folks” and “I Heart Food.”

More about these menus…

myfolksI think you’re going to enjoy the “Favorites” menu (listed under “About”).  It’s a nice, long list of my favorite websites, organized by main topics. (Yes, there are a lot, and I do read most of them frequently. It’s what I usually do when I’m laying in bed Saturday and Sunday mornings.)

The menus listed under “My Folks” give more detail about the people I mention on this blog. If ever you’re reading a post and want to know more about someone I mention, just hover over the “My Folks” tab–you’re likely to find who you’re looking for there.

I’m super excited about the “Recipes” menu. I hope to crank out more original recipes this year, and that menu will make it easier for you to find any recipe you’re looking for.

Other exciting changes…

topicsYou can now find any of my regularly-discussed topics (like {infatuation friday}, Tech Tuesday, Noms and more) under “Topics” on the right side of the page. I’ve narrowed it down quite a bit in hopes that it won’t be so overwhelming.

I’m also really excited about the new photos on the main menu pages. I definitely like seeing this new, coherent version of my menus. (I realize how conceited that may seem; I’m just incredibly excited about the new look.)

You’ll probably notice other, smaller changes as you navigate. I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I do. Go ahead. Start exploring!

{infatuation friday}

  1. Smoothies. I’ve been drinking smoothies for breakfast every day this week. I’ve been trying different varieties, and (mostly) loving them. More on that next week.
  2. Being Human. Josh and I have been watching season one on Netflix, and we’re both kind of addicted. I seriously wanted to stay up all night last night to finish out the season. (In case you don’t know, Being Human is a show on Syfy about a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost who are roommates.)
  3. All Groan Up. Remember how I was pinning and generally obsessing about 20-something things a few weeks ago? Well, I still am. But before most of my reading was from Thought Catalog. While I still enjoy Thought Catalog, I’ve also begun reading All Groan Up. I feel like I learn more from this site than from the latter because it touches on several things that I’m going through (like post-grad job-hunting and self-worth tied to a career) as well as values that are important to me (like faith, friends and family). My favorite so far has been 21 Secrets for Your 20s (it’s also available as a free ebook).
  4. Black Bean Burgers. I used this recipe to make these Wednesday night. They were a success! So simple and so yummy. Plus I got to geek out over using my food processor. (It’s just so darn awesome!)
  5. Dogshaming. I actually found this about a month ago, but I keep forgetting to share it. If you are a dog owner or know a dog owner, you’ll probably like this a lot. I laughed until I cried when I looked at it the first time.
  6. Stuff Mom Never Told You. I’ve been a Mom Stuff fan for nearly a year, but I’m mentioning it now because of its new Tumblr page. Cristen and Caroline, the hosts of the podcast and writers for the blog, share fun facts about women (and some about men) they find via Tumblr. Occasionally they’ll add their own commentary (like Caroline does in this post about woman-shaming).
  7. Scribblenauts Remix. This was the Starbucks Pick of the Week last week. I picked up the card with the code, but didn’t download it until last night. I’m still learning how to play (I have to use very precise language to get the objects I need), but I’m having a lot of fun with it. I love that it really makes me think. If you download it ($0.99), I suggest taking the tutorial. It doesn’t take long, and you’ll definitely need it to understand the game.
  8. Philly Swirl. Hilary and I tried the Swirl Cups with Candy Spoonz earlier this week. You can try different candy/cup combos to make a variety of flavors. I tried Rainbow ice with what appeared to be a rainbow spoon (it wasn’t; it was bubblegum flavored… ew!). I liked the italian ice and hope to try another (hopefully better) flavor combo later.
  9. This review of Bieber’s new single. I think this person was listening when I was ranting a few weeks ago about Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me.” Seriously. Every point is one I made to Hilary and Josh. The thing that irritates me the most is that the Biebs is singing about how he could be poor and starving and it wouldn’t matter; that’s something he’ll never have to experience. Actually, it’s a toss-up between that and Big Sean calling some chick his hallelujah. *facepalm*
  10. The iPhone 5. Of course, I can’t go without mentioning the release of the new iPhone. Yes, I want one. No, I won’t buy one. At least not immediately. I’m broke and would rather see some reviews on it first. Plus, there’s a chance the 4s is (now available for $99) is a much better deal.

Happy Blogiversary!

Today, this blog is one year old. So instead of having another {infatuation friday}, let’s celebrate by looking back at some highlights of the past year.

(Inspiration for this blogiversary post was from Healthy Tipping Point’s fourth blogiversary.)

Since I started this blog, I’ve…

Started interning for a magazine publishing company (and they throw an awesome Tacky Christmas party!),

Graduated college,

and Moved into a new apartment with my boyfriend.

In the past year, I’ve written 47 blog posts. Among those are…

My Five favorite posts:

  1. What I’m into this week. Although this isn’t my best writing, it’s probably my most favorite post since it was the precursor to {infatuation friday}.
  2. My Summer Reading List. It was so much fun to look around online and find a bunch of books I wanted to read. Once I started the list, I found it hard to stop (just don’t ask me how many books I’ve crossed off).
  3. I love my dad. This was a big deal to me because it’s not something I write about much or share with my dad. It was kind of therapeutic.
  4. Adventures of week one. The first week in our new apartment was insane!
  5. Review: My Thoughts on Bubble Frame. This was so much fun to write! It was really interesting to write a little differently than usual.

The first post to the blog:

It hasn’t been much–let’s be honest, less than 50 posts in a year isn’t necessarily something to admire–but this past year of blogging has been really exciting and adventurous for me, particularly since I started writing more this summer.

I hope to see this blog continue to grow over the next year, and I can’t wait to find out what amazing things will happen in that time.

If you have a favorite post from the past year, I’d love to know! Share your thoughts in the comments.
