40 Recipes to Try This Fall

fall photo

It’s fall, y’all! (Yep, I’ve been holding onto that one for a while.) And since I forgot to post some sort of “hello, fall” something on Sunday, well, you get it now.

I know most people probably hear fall and think of pumpkins. And, I mean, I do too. But I also think of butternut squash, sweet potatoes, candy corn, hearty soups and stews, chili and, believe it or not, apples (often covered in some sort of nut and/or melted candy).

Obviously, it’s all about the food.

Speaking of food, I’ve rounded up 40 delicious-looking recipes that I think will be perfect for fall. Some of these I’ve tried and loved (looking at you, Pumpkin Chili). 1. dishesSpring Cleaning. It’s almost that time of year. And, well, my apartment complex has decided that spring cleaning should happen in February (we actually have annual cleanliness inspections–lolwut). So I’ve created a temporary board for ideas on getting my home to look sparkly and new. (Since I already have these pins mixed in with other random tips and tricks, I’ll probably delete this board at the beginning of summer.)
  2. Vine. I’ve been thinking about possibly getting into the Vine app, but I’ve heard complaints that there is a major problem with porn in the app. Basically, the app allows users to upload 6-second videos to Vine, which can then be shared on Twitter and/or Facebook. Much like on Twitter or Instagram, you can explore trending topics and hashtags (which, I’m guessing, is where people are happening upon explicit material). Since Vine has received a lot of complaints about children finding pornographic clips, Vine has changed its age restriction to 17+. (I may still get try it because it seems I may need to know how to use it as a journalist.) Available in iTunes for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. FREE.
  3. We The People. The White House’s We the People site currently has  a petition for President Obama to start using more inclusive language in his speeches. Specifically, the petition asks that the president “Stop using the ‘wives, mothers, & daughters’ rhetorical frame that defines women by their relationships to other people.” The petition still needs about 97,000 signatures before March 15. Sign it today and spread the word!
  4. Tamagotchi. Nineties kids, rejoice. Tamagotchi is back (and probably needier than ever). Sure, you won’t get to carry your digital pet around on a cool key chain, but who cares? You get your favorite little guy back (and no pesky teacher can ban you from having it)! And this time, your mom won’t have to feed it every ten minutes. Just whip out your phone and feed your pet, then get back to work–just don’t let your boss know that’s not really an important email you were checking. Available in Google Play for Android. (iTunes version is in the works.) FREE.
  5. moviesPitch Perfect. Thanks to Redbox’s Valentine’s Day code from Redbox, I rented Pitch Perfect for free last night. We’re going to watch it tonight as part of our Valentine date. (There were supposed to be two Valentine codes–I was going to rent three movies in all–but one didn’t work; that was disappointing because I wanted to rent the latest Bourne movie for Josh to watch today while I’m not home.)
  6. The Watch. Another freebie from Redbox. Yesterday, Redbox posted a code on Facebook to celebrate reaching 5,000 fans. We’ll also be watching the Watch tonight. (We’re both stoked about this movie.)
  7. Gumbo. On Fat Tuesday, my sister shared this Chicken and Sausage Gumbo recipe on my Facebook wall and told me to make it for her. I haven’t made it yet, but, although it’s no longer Mardi Gras, I still really want to try it. Obviously there will be photos if I make it.
  8. Spiders. Have you seen this video of the bajillion spiders raining down in Brazil? Creeeeppppyyyy! According to the Washington Post article, this isn’t uncommon. Sometimes the wind picks up these spiders (they make big webs in the sky) and when it releases them, they look like they’re just falling from the sky. So… I think I won’t be going to Brazil, like, ever.
  9. beautyDove. Have you  seen this commercial from Dove? It was kind of surprising considering Dove’s Real Beauty campaign. This commercial (and the comments posted below it) presents a good discussion about a happiness tied to beauty products. I’d love to read your thoughts about this in the comments!
  10. Post-Valentine’s Day. Today is one of my favorite holidays: the day after Valentine’s Day. It’s a magical day when all the Valentine crafts and candies go on sale (like, 50-plus percent). It’s beautiful, really. I hope I don’t get to the store too late to rack up on some adorable Valentine sprinkles. And lots of chocolate. Because it offers lots of health benefits, and even if that list isn’t super long, it’s good enough for me.

  1. lunchNoodles. Um, you guys, I made the best, most delicious, most awesome lunch yesterday. It was a noodly, vegetably, cheesy goodness. And when I figure out how exactly to recreate it, I’m gonna share it with you. Lunch at my place! (Kidding. But I really will get to work on that recipe.)
  2. Word Warp. By suggestion from my dad, I downloaded Word Warp last night. I haven’t had a chance to try it out. According to the app’s Facebook page, the point of the game is to “form as many words as you can out of the six letters you are given before time runs out.” A “Word Warp” button available to rearrange the letters when you get stumped. This app is available in iTunes for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. FREE
  3. Scream & Shout. Newest addiction: Scream & Shout. Thank you, Will.I.Am and Britney for turning my morning commute into a dance party.
  4. The Nest. I stumbled on this site earlier this week when I was helping my sister with wedding stuffs at The Knot. The Nest seems to be targeted toward newlyweds, but it’s got a lot of great stuff for pretty much anyone, with topics ranging from home organization, money management, recipes and more. It’s kind of been my go-to site this week.
  5. Now. Now uses location updates Instagram to let you know what’s happening in your area in real time. It’s a really good concept, but I only get two updates when I log in. I think maybe more people have to get on board with adding a location to Instagram uploads (myself included–that ish freaks me out) before this really works. If you’re in or near a large city, I definitely suggest checking it out. (Let me know if you have more success than I did!) Available in iTunes for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. FREE
  6. breakfastBreakfast (again, again). So… I may or may not have made brunch again over the weekend. Okay, so I did. What of it? Seriously, though, I’m surprised this phase hasn’t gone away yet. Even more surprising (not): I want brunch again this weekend. I’m feeling some crepes.
  7. BvB Racing. Blonde versus Brunette Racing is a game in which you–duh–race. I only played one round, which gave me the choice of playing as the blonde or brunette racer, and I raced against a redhead. It looks like the game can be multi-player, but I haven’t taken the time to figure that out yet. I’m not hooked, but I’ll give it a few more tries before I totally dismiss it. I caught it as a freebie , but it’s usually a paid app. Available in iTunes for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. $1.99
  8. Cultiwords. This app helps you expand your vocabulary by teaching you the meaning and some background info of the words in a pack. Then you are quizzed to acquire these words, adding them to your dictionary. The initial download comes with a 40-word pack, and extension packs are available as in-app purchases. This is another app I got for free that is usually paid. Available in iTunes for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. $0.99
  9. photo (18)Inspiration. Because I posted it so late yesterday, I want to draw attention to the “Inspiration sharesies” post I added yesterday. There are some really great links in there, so definitely check it out.
  10. Biebs. I jammed out to Justin Bieber’s Beauty And A Beat three times yesterday. Then, when I told Josh, I begged him to please love me anyway. (No, that actually happened. He laughed at me.) And in the past week, I’ve caught myself singing along with Katy Perry and Taylor Swift (her new, teen-pop-esque album) too. What am I, thirteen?
